Vallombrosa's Transformation
⚠ DM-ONLY — CAMPAIGN SPOILERS. Players should not read it.
Type: Act One → Act Two transition | "From dead zone to eerie town."
When Marcello claims the di Errante estates, Vallombrosa transforms from a cursed dead zone into a functional — but eerie — town. The fog thins to perpetual twilight, the structures restore to unsettling perfection, and a population appears with false memories of always having lived there. This is the hinge between Act One and Act Two.
The Arrival (Recommended)
Ideally during the Autumn Masquerade Ball. Silas makes his final move; the party fights him; and at the climactic moment Marcello appears and effortlessly defeats Silas, demonstrating power far beyond anything yet encountered. He presents himself as "Marcello, descendant of the third di Errante brother," produces documentation, and invites everyone to continue the celebration at his family's ancestral home.
Physical Transformation
The fog remains but thins to roughly fifty feet of visibility, creating perpetual twilight. The manor and estate structures restore to beautiful functionality; streets and buildings appear intact and elegant. Everything carries a slightly unreal quality — too perfect, too clean, subtly wrong. Plants grow, but pale and strange. Water flows. The place becomes livable and persistently unsettling.
The Population
At the same time, Vallombrosa gains residents who seem always to have been there — the people who vanished into the fog across the past millennium, now manifested as functional community members with complex false memories. They serve as NPCs, information sources, potential allies, and civilians who need protection, giving Vallombrosa the feel of a living community essential to its Barovia-like structure.
Campaign Structure Shift
Act Two runs like a modified Curse of Strahd. Vallombrosa is Marcello's domain — his power strongest here, his influence pervasive, his control near-absolute. Perpetual fog and twilight. Functional but eerie. Leaving feels difficult: confusing navigation, looping roads. The di Errante estate and its surrounding structures provide iconic locations rich in environmental storytelling and tactical significance.
