Tartuzi

Tartuzi is the sphinx whose knowledge Lorenzo exploited to bind The Keeper of Faces. By the hidden logic of the ritual, the one who provided the binding knowledge became cosmically accountable for it. Tartuzi was pulled into the mechanism as its eternal lock.

The Consultation

Lorenzo came to Tartuzi for the date and principles needed to bind an Archfey. As a sphinx, she was metaphysically compelled to answer sincere questions with genuine knowledge. Lorenzo knew this and used her nature as part of the ritual design.

She did not simply provide information. She became the component the binding required.

Why She Let It Happen

Tolomeo Lucente had been imprisoned beyond the boundary for centuries. Tartuzi had been sustaining him through their pact. When she felt the tether form, she understood what was coming and chose not to flee. Becoming the lock meant she might be pulled into the prison near him.

She calculated correctly that she could reach him. She did not calculate Silas.

Current Role

Tartuzi is both prisoner and prison mechanism. She can perceive the prison's structure, but every available ending is compromised: ending the prison may free dangerous powers, while preserving it prolongs her own enslavement and the Keeper's suffering.

She is also Kryton's hidden warlock patron. The memory Kryton won at the Undertow was arranged so he would find it.
