The Prison Mechanics — Why It's Collapsing Now

The prison is failing from three simultaneous drains that have compounded to breaking. Marcello's return has accelerated the very deterioration he came to investigate.

Drain One: The Original Theft

Lorenzo didn't drain the Keeper like emptying a cup — he excised something from the Keeper's fundamental nature. The Keeper is imprisoned with a wound that cannot close, because the stolen power sits outside his reach, sustaining someone else. Normally an Archfey recovers by drawing on their domain. But the domain is failing.

Drain Two: Domain Collapse

Archfey are sustained by being what they are — their domain must be alive and functioning. The Keeper needs a court where identity is celebrated and performed. The Pale Carnival fractured the moment he was imprisoned, and without his governing intelligence it degraded; as it degraded, so did his ability to draw sustenance from it. He has been in slow starvation for a thousand years, trying to recover through a domain that is itself dying.

Drain Three: The Fanes as Pipeline

The fanes are not mere storage for stolen power — they are a continuous mechanism, routing residual power from the Keeper to stabilize Marcello's stolen abilities on an ongoing basis. Stolen Archfey power is fundamentally unstable in a mortal vessel; without a constant feed from its source, it degrades. Each fane governs a different aspect of that stabilization. For a thousand years the fanes have drawn a slow, continuous trickle from an already-wounded prisoner who cannot replenish what he loses. Destroying a fane weakens Marcello — but also accelerates the Keeper's deterioration, since removing a regulated channel makes the remaining draws more erratic and damaging.

Why Now — The Intersection Point

Three degradation curves have finally met. The Keeper's original reserves are genuinely exhausted. The Pale Carnival has degraded past providing meaningful sustenance. The fanes are accumulating structural wear after a millennium. And Marcello, back to investigate his weakening power, instinctively spends more time at the binding site where his abilities are strongest — increasing the draw on the Keeper, accelerating the very collapse he came to study. He has been making it worse since he arrived.
